When Swimmers Escaped Violence, Popular Photo Shows Beach Patrol Sprinting ‘Pedal to the Metal’ To the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent local of Bondi, has always considered the renowned beach as her own backyard. On a recent weekend evening, she, similar to other neighbors, noticed cracking sounds reverberating across the suburb.

“That was the initial assumption, but I reasoned it was daylight and no one could see them,” Ching states. Exiting her home, she witnessed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. Their expressions she saw told her trouble had occurred.

While standing on the street, speaking to a pair who had rushed up the slope soaked, she heard someone moving up from behind. The person was a beach patrol officer, dashing to Bondi unshod from the adjacent Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while transporting a life-saving kit.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I spotted this streak in blue,” Ching describes. “He was zooming past. He was alone running in the direction that the crowd was trying to escape from, and hauling that large equipment and barefoot … He moved at something that certainly every fibre in your being would signal you to move in the reverse way.

“Just no hesitation, but just completely full throttle running.”

An Iconic Image of Courage During Crisis

The photograph Ching captured of the lifeguard, since identified as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as among numerous moments of heroism in the wake of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to support the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to aid other rescuers, police and paramedics caring for numerous the injured.

Community Outpouring and Assistance

Doolan’s account was just one of many to come out of the local area, with the lifeguard clubhouse next to the scene of the attack transforming into a temporary hospital. It was shared that other team members were also seen helping out, for instance entering the surf to save people needing help.

In the days after the events, messages of support circulated widely. An online statement shared appreciation for the responders who exhibited that “compassion will always overcome hatred”.

The team of rescuers later shared a communication, saying they were “processing what occurred”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your thoughtful messages and support. We are touched by the compassion for our personnel,” the team wrote. “When ready, we will recount our experiences in the aim that it helps those impacted.”

Council Commendation

Waverley council, the administrative organization that oversees many professional lifeguards, remarked that the staff acted heroically from the instant the shooting began through to late that nighttime.

“We have heard so many powerful accounts, but the popular image of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help save lives is extraordinary,” stated a local official.

“The team exhibit dedication every day in ensuring our iconic coastlines protected for the public, but what we saw on that day should be commended.

“As we grieve and process the horror of this heinous tragedy, I think it is vital that we consider just how much light we have observed in the midst of such evil.”
