The people of Israel commemorate two-year anniversary of October 7th incident as Gaza ceasefire negotiations continue
People have gathered around the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-initiated offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations continued in the neighboring country over an end to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The attack led to in excess of 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured back to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely most fatal day for Jews since the World War II.
Israel reacted by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are seen as reliable by the UN and other global organizations.
"The bloodthirsty opponents have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the return of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will never again present a risk to Israel".
Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel
The government authorities rescheduled state remembrance events until 16 October - after the end of the religious holiday season - but events still were held around the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the relatives of Israelis killed in the Hamas attack was held in Tel Aviv. Organized by the affected families, it was televised across Israeli television channels.
A period earlier, a silent tribute was held throughout the country.
Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt
Simultaneously, both sides' delegations convened in the North African Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to discuss the terms of the plan.
A senior representative familiar with the discussions indicated that an evening round of indirect talks commenced at 7 PM local time.
The source said the morning session ended without significant progress, due to disagreements over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not restart hostilities after the opening period of the arrangement.
He added that the negotiations are "tough and have yet to achieve any major advancement," but mentioned that intermediaries are making efforts to narrow the gaps between the both parties.
Critical Issues in Talks
- An enduring ceasefire
- The swap of the captives still held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The pullout of troops from Gaza
- Plans for assistance provision
- After-conflict administration of the area
Public Sentiment
In the city's Hostages Square that day, young Hagar - whose family member survived the incident on the gathering, where hundreds were killed and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - told: "No place feels like home any longer and until every captive come back no one will feel safe."
"After we see everyone home returned, we can relax once more. Then we can commence recover," she added.
Near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in Jerusalem, people congregated to show their solidarity for the relatives of the captives. Israel states 48 remain in confinement in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be alive.
Protester a participant remarked: "We must do whatever arrangement necessary for the abducted to return. But we really want guarantees that we will be protected."
Surveys now consistently show that around the majority of Israeli citizens want the war to finish in exchange for the liberation of the abducted.
Palestinian Circumstances
At the site of the music event, grieving people assembled to remember the victims.
From there, the noise of aerial bombardments and shelling could be detected just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the severe Israeli bombardment carried on.
In the main city, air and artillery strikes were reported in the early hours of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and locality areas and in the eastern area of the community, as well the camp to the northwestern area.
"Once the evening comes, the anxiety arrives with it," relocated urban resident a local woman, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, explained.
"Me and my three children are fearful of the air strikes. During nighttime we are lying together, embracing, notably my youngest child who rests his face on me throughout the night."
"Constantly we monitor the updates to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be completed and that the fighting will resume to us."
Humanitarian Crisis
The medical facility in the urban area said it had taken in the bodies of several people by the daytime, including three who lost their lives in an Israeli bombing in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Another medical facility in the southern city of that area said additional fatalities had been brought there. An individual was lost his life by Israeli troops while attempting to get help to the south, health workers stated.
