The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Chose the Incorrect Critical Role Song
This latest animated series, the newest animated series by the beloved role-playing group, unveiled a new opening credits. It showcases our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at several agonizing backstories for characters such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, Fjord.
Overall, the opening looks amazing. However, I felt that an element was lost in the music selection.
The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional composition created by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic option, and I believe that fans of the sequel series will love its presence.
Personally, The series' intro fails to capture the hype and energy that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was first revealed in that year, and it improved further when co-founder the performer added lyrics to the melody for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as the writer, the song was memorable and fun. At the time, I hadn't seen the follow-up series yet, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The show's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its tone is a little off.
Naturally, Critical Role has already said that the series will have some changes and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening seems to be one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on Prime Video from November 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are accessible on the audio platform and the video site.
