The Game UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller Merging Survival Horror with Among Us Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"This is a unique game where a girl containing multiple personalities inside her must escape from a maze of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Within her reside four distinct souls, each with their own anxieties and drives. These entities can take over at will, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.
Based on showcased footage, much of the action unfolds within a creepy medical facility, while other scenes depict the main character navigating a abandoned chapel.
An Environment of Individual Dread
"What are you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to other people can trigger something primal inside us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are unique to each person."
The central mechanic involves controlling the persona that emerges at any given moment. However, these souls will switch involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become amplified and attack the girl in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Unsettling Visuals and a Fatal Decision
Initially, UN:Me displays striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the lobby have enormous flowers growing from their necks should be. Flowers are an ever-present element, contrasting organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "Each of the personas claims that the body is rightfully them," notes a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
After a player believes a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. But, since every entity can lie or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The last one remaining might be a fake. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
