The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Renowned for Creating Looks for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect responsible for some of the most iconic looks worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.
Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, including the light-hued ensembles that featured in rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
Price's death comes less than a month after he debuted his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to blend menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in designing body-hugging looks made him a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he began working on ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as various looks for her American tour following her marriage.
After a career spanning more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.
