Tetris Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Each time a significant honors show draws close, you'll find a clamor for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
