Patients Discontinuing Slimming Medications Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing such medications should be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Doctors believe the way of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Experiences

People who have stopped the medication report a intense return of appetite.

"I experienced something that goes on and you become starving," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle support.
