Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.

Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.

“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His family, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.

“Still unsure,” he added. “But I will say this, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”

NYPD shared surveillance images Monday of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.

The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday morning in the area between the famous arena and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his wife just had a baby.

“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd hasn’t played this season, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with a shoulder injury that needed an operation.

He signed with New York as a new signing in spring and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on early August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he attends every game. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
