Early Saturday, reports emerged of major blasts rocking the Iranian capital, amid claims from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preventative military action.
Powerful Explosions and Plumes of Smoke Witnessed in Central Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were heard in the city on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, columns of thick smoke were seen billowing over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of these blasts suggests that this is a missile attack,” one news agency reported, though it did not initially provide additional information.
Background: Escalating Tensions and Prior Events
This event occurs against a background of severely escalated tensions in the region. Key events leading up to this strike include:
- US Military Buildup: A significant build-up of US naval forces in the Middle East, featuring the movement of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent talks between the US and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with indications of more talks scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the attack, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and delivered warnings regarding its weapons development.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to resolve the nuclear dispute or confront serious repercussions.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian officials had accused the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. They rejected claims about missile development and casualty figures as unfounded.
