Inuit Women Claim Judicial Victory in Battle against Denmark regarding Forced Contraceptive Coil Scandal.

Survivors of a historical program in which numerous comprising Greenlandic women and girls reportedly were covertly implanted using contraceptive coils without their knowledge or consent are declaring victory in their legal fight with Copenhagen.

Officials have announced the women are now eligible for financial redress via a reconciliation package.

Government Settlement Finalized

Folketinget, and state authorities, finalized a deal that entitles an estimated 4,500 Greenlandic women to claim kr. 300,000 (£35,000) each.

This announcement follows a three-year campaign by a group of claimants that initiated legal proceedings demanding compensation for the trauma and distress they had endured, arguing it was a breach of their human rights.

Historical Context

The Danish state ruled Greenland under colonial rule for decades maintaining control of its medical services into the late 20th century.

Earlier this year, after years of failing to acknowledge the violations, Denmark issued a formal expression of regret. The prime minister expressed sorrow for the “institutional prejudice” targeting women and girls within the state medical apparatus.

“These actions caused significant impacts for the affected women who suffered both bodily but also mental trauma,” said a government minister.

Redress Process Details

Authorities clarified those who were given contraception without their knowledge or consent during a thirty-one year period would be able to apply for compensation starting next year. The law is set to be enacted in June.

Based on results of an impartial inquiry of medical procedures during that time, an estimated 4,500 individuals are potentially eligible for the fund.

For eligibility, applicants must:

• Provide a “plausible account” detailing what happened.
• Have lived in Greenland throughout the specified timeframe.
• State on oath that they possessed no awareness nor gave permission for it to occur.

Voices of Survivors

One of the plaintiffs, who was 14 at the time she was instructed to report to the hospital for no clear reason, described the experience like an assault.

“Speaking out as speakers and interviewees proved effective,” she said. “It began in 2022 resulting in within three years we got an official apology and financial acknowledgment.”

Another voice expressed happiness, stating, “We are happy. Like my mother said: it's a victory.” Although there is a view the amount could have been higher, there is contentment over the acknowledgment of past events.

Official Reactions

A Greenlandic minister called the settlement being “long overdue”. She emphasized, “It is not primarily financial. It concerns recognition of the injury and its very severe implications.”

The relevant cabinet member conceded these events represent a “dark chapter within the shared history”, noting while redress “will not erase the pain from the women” yet it “serves to recognize and apologise for the experiences.”
