India's capital Awakens to Hazardous Pollution After Festival of Lights
On Tuesday morning citizens of the planet's dirtiest urban center encountered exposed to dangerously toxic air that fell into the "critical" category.
Record-Breaking Pollution Readings
Several parts of the city registered an AQI exceeding 500, which represents 10x the recommended threshold established by the World Health Organization.
Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of 1,800, representing 15-20x above safe standards.
Fireworks Ban and Recent Policy Shifts
For the past four years, authorities had enforced a total prohibition on the sale and use of fireworks during the Festival of Lights due to their significant contribution to the dangerous pollution that covers the metropolis as the cold season approaches.
However earlier this year, the newly elected local leadership approached the highest court to propose a modification of the prohibition.
The suggestion was allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – which have been questioned by environmentalists as being only approximately one-third lower impact – as a compromise between "tradition and environment".
Court Decision and Implementation
To the disappointment of medical and ecological advocates, judicial authorities approved the request, specifying that green firecrackers could be set off during designated time windows throughout the festival.
On Monday night, there was considerable flouting of the designated hours across the metropolis, with little enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the more environmentally friendly variety.
Numerous recording stations throughout the city showed contamination reaching highest levels around late evening to extremely hazardous readings seen during the festival in at least recent memory.
Regional Consequences
The proliferation of firecrackers during the festival also sparked a controversy with neighbouring the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab pointing to worsening atmospheric conditions in their urban centers on pollutants originating in neighboring India following the events.
Long-Standing Pollution Crisis
The dangerously high readings of atmospheric toxins in the city have persisted as a serious challenge for more than 15 years, with the condition continuing to worsen.
Around Diwali, the levels of hazardous particles in the air has been observed to spike to seventy percent above the peak records ever measured in China's capital, which was formerly viewed as the world's most polluted city.
Multiple Contamination Factors
This crisis in the city is caused by a convergence of various sources including transportation pollution, airborne particles, building projects, rubbish burning and haze from agricultural fires in neighbouring states of farming communities.
Within these states, rural residents routinely ignite agricultural waste to prepare for next season, creating hazardous smog that then gets trapped over the metropolitan area as colder air arrives.
Public Health and Financial Impact
The economic and health impact on the nearly 33 million residents calling home the Delhi area is enormous, according to various studies.
These hazardous conditions results in elevated rates of neurological, heart and circulatory and breathing conditions, and can potentially cause malignancies.
Environmental contamination is calculated to be accounting for ten thousand untimely deaths annually in the city.
