England's Assistant Coach Shares His Approach: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.

A decade ago, Anthony Barry featured in League Two. Now, his attention is fixed to assist the England manager claim the World Cup trophy in 2026. The road from player to coach started with a voluntary role for Accrington's Under-16s. He remembers, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and it captivated him. He discovered his destiny.

Rapid Rise

His advancement has been remarkable. Starting with his first major job, he established a standing with creative training and excellent people skills. His stints with teams took him to top European clubs, while also serving in international positions across multiple countries. His players include stars like world-class talents. Currently, in the England setup, it's all-consuming, the top as he describes it.

“All begins with a vision … Yet I'm convinced that obsession can move mountains. You have the dream then you break it down: ‘How can we achieve it, each day, each phase?’ Our goal is the World Cup. But dreams won’t get it done. We must create a systematic approach enabling us for optimal success.”

Obsession with Details

Dedication, especially with the smallest details, is central to his philosophy. Working every hour under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, the coaching duo challenge limits. The approach feature mental assessments, a strategy for high temperatures for the finals abroad, and building a true team. The coach highlights the national team spirit and avoids language including "pause".

“It's not time off or a rest,” Barry notes. “It was vital to establish a setup that attracts the squad and they're pushed that returning to club duty feels easier.”

Ambitious Trainers

Barry describes himself and the head coach as “very greedy”. “We aim to control all parts of the match,” he declares. “We want to conquer every metre of the pitch and that's our focus long hours toward. Our responsibility not just to keep up of the trends but to beat them and innovate. It's an ongoing effort focused on finding solutions. And it’s to make the complex clear.

“There are 50 days with the players prior to the World Cup. We must implement an intricate approach for a tactical edge and we have to make it so clear in our 50 days with them. We need to progress from thought to data to understanding to action.

“To build a methodology for effective use in the 50 days, it's crucial to employ all the time available since we took the job. When the squad is away, it's vital to develop bonds among them. We must dedicate moments communicating regularly, observing them live, feel them, touch them. Relying only on those 50 days, we won't succeed.”

World Cup Qualifiers

The coach is focusing ahead of the concluding matches in the qualifying campaign – versus Serbia in London and Albania in Tirana. They've already ensured qualification with six wins out of six with perfect defensive records. However, they won't relax; instead. This period to strengthen the squad's character, to maintain progress.

“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the football philosophy ought to embody the best aspects of English football,” he comments. “The fitness, the versatility, the strength, the work ethic. The Three Lions kit should be harder than ever to get yet easy to carry. It must resemble a cloak not protective gear.

“To ensure it's effortless, we need to provide a style that allows them to operate like they do every week, that resonates with them and lets them release restrictions. They should overthink less and focus more on action.

“You can gain psychological edges you can get as a coach in the first and final thirds – building from the defense, closing down early. Yet, in the central zone in that part of the ground, it seems football is static, especially in England's top flight. Everybody has so much information these days. They understand tactics – mid-blocks, deep blocks. We are focusing to speed up play in that central area.”

Drive for Growth

Barry’s hunger to get better is relentless. During his education for the Uefa pro licence, he was worried regarding the final talk, as his cohort contained luminaries like Lampard and Carrick. To enhance his abilities, he sought out tough situations imaginable to improve his talks. One was HMP Walton in his home city of Liverpool, where he also took inmates for a training session.

Barry graduated as the best in his year, and his research paper – about dead-ball situations, for which he analysed numerous set-plays – was published. Lampard was among those convinced and he brought Barry on to his staff at Chelsea. When Frank was fired, it was telling that the team dismissed virtually all of his coaches except Barry.

Lampard’s successor at Chelsea became Tuchel, and, four months later, they claimed the Champions League. After Tuchel's exit, Barry stayed on under Graham Potter. But when Tuchel re-emerged at Munich, he brought Barry over away from London to work together again. The FA see them as a double act similar to Southgate and Holland.
